CAPRIMULGIFORMES: Aegothelidae
Aegotheles cristatus
The owlet-nightjar didn't react to the passing pedestrian and bicycle traffic only metres away but reacted sharply towards a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets which flew into the same tree where they also have a hole.
Possibly the speed of approach of the lorikeets startled it or it had previously had issues with lorikeets over residency rights in this hole and it was reacting defensively.
The lorikeets returning to the tree on an earlier occasion resulted in the owlet-nightjar withdrawing to the back of its hole.
